The Evolution of Basket Mill Technology: From Traditional Milling to Modern Innovations

One of the most commonly used types of milling solution was the rotary quern, which utilized a pair of large stones to grind grain into flour. This was likely invented around the 1st Century BCE.
The Industrial Revolution brought astonishing advances and new technology for manufacturing, including the development of mechanical mixers.
Though a significant step forward from earlier hand grinding processes and techniques, these early machines were still relatively labor intensive. They also presented problems such as inefficiency and inconsistent particle sizes.

The Emergence of Basket Mills
Hockmeyer invented the immersion mill, now commonly known as the basket mill, in the 1990s. Our working principle was to open the door to greater productivity and higher efficiency in particle reduction. Our basket mill design was granted a US patent in 1993.
Some of the earliest adopters of basket milling were the industrial paints and coatings, ink production, and chemicals sectors. Other industries soon followed, and basket milling is now regarded as one of the most efficient and effective ways of wet grinding: particle size reduction.
What Advantages Do Basket Mills Offer Over Horizontal Mills, Ball Mills, and Other Wet-Grinding Solutions?
Basket mills offer several compelling advantages over traditional milling techniques, such as horizontal and ball mills.
The basket volume of basket mills allows for more efficient processing of materials in each batch, enhancing productivity. Unlike other milling machines, basket mills have fewer parts and are, therefore, easier to set up, use, and clean.
Basket mills are versatile and can handle a wide range of raw materials. With customizable grinding fineness via interchangeable screens, narrow particle size distribution, superior speed controls, and easy submersible cleaning, they can adapt to many applications.

Improved Flow Mechanisms
Improved flow mechanisms have improved passage through the grind chamber, resulting in narrower particle size distribution for a higher quality final product.
We invented and patented three important flow-enhancing mechanisms for the basket mill:
Our HCP Immersion Mills feature a patented [2007] auger design on the upper part of the machine. This auger works with the patented [1996] bottom propeller to feed material through the milling basket chamber at optimal speeds and maximize material flow. The patented [2012] scraper/helical blade allows users to process high-viscosity materials while assisting with flow and controlling temperature. The bi-directional scrapers scrape the feedstock off the inside of the vessel, and the helical blade feeds the material back to the center of the tank to pass through the milling chamber.

Our counter-peg insert assembly [patent 1998] within the basket doubled the number of impact points and increased efficiency by 100%.
Automation and Process Control
