Milling Technology

Milling Technology Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Hockmeyer's milling technology unique?

    • The original 1993 patent for Immersion Mill technology
    • Seven additional patents covering incremental improvements
    • Patents related to NexGen Vacuum Recirculation Milling Technology issued in 2014, 2017, and 2021

These innovations provide advanced milling performance and process efficiency.

  • How much media should be loaded into basket mills that have counter-pegs?

Fill the milling chamber with media to the bottom of the cone on top of the peg hub.

  • How much media should be loaded into basket mills that don’t have counter-pegs?

Fill the media to the top of the rotating pegs.

  • What size media should be used in basket mills relative to the desired particle size?

The media should be approximately 1,000 times larger than the desired particle size.
  • What is the recommended media-to-screen ratio when using basket mills?

Use a 3:1 media-to-screen ratio. For example, 1.5 mm media should be paired with a 0.5 mm screen.
  • What should be done when first lowering the immersion mill into the product?

Once the screens enter the product, jog the mill to prevent air from forcing media out of the upper draft tube.

  • What media bead size is recommended for a 6.5 Hegman grind or larger?

Use 1.5 mm media beads for the best results.
  • What should be done when first lowering the immersion mill into the product?

Once the screens enter the product, jog the mill to prevent air from forcing media out of the upper draft tube.
  • Should the auger be visible while operating a Hockmeyer immersion basket mill?

No. When the mill is operating properly in the product, the auger should not be visible.

  • How should thinner products be handled during basket milling?

Thinner products may require the tank to be offset to prevent the mill from pulling air into the product.

  • How do low viscosity and low solids products affect the wear of basket mill parts?

Thinner products generally cause more wear on mill components. To increase viscosity, add pigment or powder solids rather than resin solids, since resin solids can increase milling time.
